Ooooo, 1999.
It's a new year, and a new attitude.
Ok, let's just cut the cliches, shall we?
New Year's was truly great for me. I was able to spend time with people I really care about, even though plans to go out fell through at the last minute and I ended up not seeing one of my friends, I did at least get to see a friend of mine from New Jersey. We ended up sitting around in the kitchen drinking and laughing and joking around all night, but it was good.
What more could I have asked for? I was surrounded by friends. I was safe and warm and happy, and yes-- drunk.
I have a good attitude about this year. 1997 was the worst year of my life. 1998 was somewhat better, but it still had a lot of down points. 1999 is going to be better, I can feel it.
In a sense, though, it's kind of silly to feel this way just because we're putting a new calendar on the wall, and we're struggling with writing the new date.
But, it gives us Americans (and people all over the world, but..) yet another chance (excuse) to reinvent ourselves. It's such an American ideal that's carried over through American literature for hundreds of years-- since the beginning of America's history. We wanted a new world to start over, so here we are in the United States. And on and on it goes, until it's 1999 and now we're still finding excuses to reinvent ourselves. I'm not just talking about making little improvements, I'm talking about major overhauls in our personality, in the way we act towards others, in our attitudes-- major stuff. And it's our freedom and right as Americans to change ourselves as often as we see fit.
How have you reinvented yourself? How will you reinvent yourself in '99?
What mask are you wearing today?
